19 July 2014 – Saturday: St. Petersburg

Today we visit Catherine’s Palace in Tsarskoe Selo, in the suburb of Pushkin.  An extraordinary palace adorned in ornate decorations covered in gold leaf.  The palace has been restored to it’s original beauty after extensive damage during World War II.  The tour of the palace and gardens fill our morning.  After lunch we toured the city by bus taking several photo stops before touring the Peter and Paul Fortress.  After supper we experienced a Cossack Folklore Show.  A very high energy performance.

18 July 2014 – Friday: St. Petersburg, Russia

After a wonderful breakfast on board the Viking Ingvar we’re off to a privileged all day tour of the Hermitage.  Our guide was excellent, knowledgeable and passionate about her job.  Her excitement in sharing her knowledge of the various works of art and the historical artifacts gave us a new look at objects we had seen on our previous visit to St. Petersburg.  The has been extensive renovations and they are ongoing.  we were able to see many things we didn’t have time to see on our previous tour.  All this before lunch.  After lunch we had a special access tour of the Hermitage’s secure storage facility.  It was impressive.  Unfortunately (understandably) we were not able to take any photographs in that facility.  We were able to see only a small part of the collection.  What we did see was paintings, furniture and carriages.  The quality and quantity was mind boggling.  After dinner we had the experience of seeing a professional production of Swan Lake.

All the Best,

17 July 2014 – Thursday: travel

We arrived in St. Petersburg around 5:30pm and were met by Viking River Cruise representatives.  The 45 minute bus ride from the airport to the river cruise port was mostly through industrial areas.  We boarded the Viking Ingvar right at supper time and enjoyed a good meal with a few relaxing glasses of wine.  The tours start tomorrow.  Stay tuned for our adventure in Russia.

All the Best,

Wayne & Dianne

16 July 2014 – Wednesday: travel

Finally, a trip that starts in daylight.  Getting up before the crack of dawn is not my idea of fun.  However, I do it happily when we are traveling.  I’m just glad i get to finish my morning routine before we head out.  Shortly after noon we’ll go to the airport to begin our journey, “Waterways of the Tzars”.  We’ll be meeting our friend Gretchen in Amsterdam for the final leg of our flight.  We’re excited to be able to travel again with Gretchen.  We traveled together in Egypt and Myanmar (Burma).  Off we go!

All the Best,

Wayne & Dianne
